Gloucestershire Airport Sold to Horizon Aero Group for Over £25 Million |
New ownership aims to modernize and expand the airport, boosting local economy |
Gloucestershire Airport has been acquired by Horizon Aero Group, a joint venture between Vayu Aviation Services Ltd (UK) and Vensa Infrastructure Ltd (India), for a sum exceeding £25 million.
The 375-acre airport, strategically located between Gloucester and Cheltenham, was jointly owned by the respective city councils. The sale, finalized in late June 2025, marks a significant transition aimed at revitalizing the airport's operations and infrastructure.
"We are honored to be selected as the preferred bidder," stated Ramdev Polkampalli, chairman of Horizon Aero Group. "Gloucestershire Airport holds enormous promise, and we are committed to preserving its heritage while investing in its future."
The acquisition comes after the airport faced financial challenges, including a £7.5 million refurbishment loan in 2021. The sale proceeds are expected to alleviate these debts, with remaining funds shared equally between the two councils.
Jeremy Hilton, leader of Gloucester City Council, expressed optimism: "The bidders had to show that they were passionate about the airport’s future and its key role in supporting the economic growth of the county."
Horizon Aero Group plans to expand the airport's business parks and enhance its role as a community and economic asset. The airport currently contributes over £50 million annually to the local economy and supports various private and commercial flights, training programs, and aviation clubs.
Rowena Hay, leader of Cheltenham Borough Council, emphasized the strategic importance of the sale: "We recognize the significant contribution that the airport makes to the regional economy and now is the right time for a new owner to drive this forward."
In recent developments, the airport successfully returned to normal operations in July 2025 after addressing regulatory concerns raised by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. This achievement underscores the airport's commitment to safety and operational excellence.
As the transition to new ownership progresses, the local community anticipates positive changes that will bolster economic growth and solidify Gloucestershire Airport's position as a key regional hub. |
